Enbridge Gas Ohio has asked the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) to approve an increase in natural gas charges for consumers across the state.

If approved, the proposal would raise bills for the average residential consumer by about $9.50 per month (approximately 10%).

What’s Changing?

Enbridge is proposing to increase the fixed monthly charge on your bill.

This charge:

  • Must be paid every month, even if you use little or no gas
  • Cannot be reduced by conserving energy
  • Makes up a larger share of your total bill

Enbridge is also proposing changes to certain riders (additional charges on your bill).

Why OCC is Involved

The Ohio Consumers’ Counsel (OCC) represents Ohio’s residential utility consumers.

OCC has intervened in this case to:

  • Challenge whether the increase is fair and justified
  • Ensure consumers pay no more than what is reasonable and affordable
  • Push the PUCO to consider the real-world impact on Ohio families

Enbridge serves approximately 1.1 million residential consumers in Ohio.

OCC Concerns

OCC is focused on affordability and the impact of rising utility costs.

Many Ohio households are already struggling with higher costs for food, housing and healthcare and rising energy bills. Enbridge’s proposal raises concerns because:

  • Fixed charges increase bills regardless of usage
  • They hit low-income households and seniors the hardest
  • Consumers cannot lower these costs by using less energy

No family should have to choose between paying a utility bill and buying essentials like food or medicine.
